World Refugee Day 2022
Each year on June 20, the world celebrates World Refugee Day. In celebration of this special day this year, we invited our participants to share their photos along the themes of My Life in Hong Kong; Live and Learn; and Hope and Healing.
In organising this photography competition, we want to celebrate the talents of our participants and also bring awareness to the community about the life of a refugee in Hong Kong, through their eyes.
As with all of the stories and quotes shared on our website, the names of our participants have been changed to protect their identity.
Scroll down to see the top three winning photos of each category!

My Life in Hong Kong
-
[1st Place] Stuck inside the city
By Sami from Sri Lanka
I took this picture because life in Hong Kong is not easy. We can survive our daily lives, but we are stuck in the same place. This image tells me the world is beautiful and there are lots of things to do and explore, but I am still barred from them.
-
[2nd Place] Survival
By Janet from Philippines
It's about surviving while looking up above (unto Jesus) and ahead. The two turtles represent me and my daughter, looking up and ahead. They are also symbolic of our life situation now - slowly moving, yet progressing. The big rocks in the background are the difficulties we have already overcome, while upon a rock we also stand with others.

[3rd Place] Happiest in nature
By Glad from Gambia
Life is so busy and full of pressure. When I can take a break to run and enjoy nature, I find peace.

[Honourable Mention] Waiting
By Michael from Eritrea

Experience the life of asylum seekers in Hong Kong
By Ryan from India
Often, asylum seekers feel as if we pawns on a chessboard. We cannot work. There is no equal treatment in court. We want the government to know that asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants who are just looking for a place to live, but people in need of protection and support. We are not criminals or terrorists. Asylum seekers have fled our home countries because our lives were threatened due to race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, or political opinion. Asylum seekers have been living in fear for years now; some have even been persecuted.

Busy with hectic life schedule of Hong Kong
By Diana from India
Life in Hong Kong as a refugee/asylum seeker means tiny rooms in congested areas and a limited budget.
-
Crying sky
By Sofia from Pakistan
Suffer hundreds of sorrows for the sake of home! I enjoy rains in Hong Kong. I wish rain would wash away all my worries.
-
For a moment
By W.D.N.R from Sri Lanka
Self
I look for a moment to
be alone in the world
Biological
Looking for words to
prove this much,
I will put aside another
moment of loneliness…
I dream of leaving this
world free and going
far...... -
The magical sunset
By Jasmine from Yemen
I like watching the sun set in Hong Kong, because its rays seems so friendly. It feels as if, in their own melodious symphony, they are telling me that no matter what, all the glitter and gold will sooner or later be lost in the very same infinity in which you are looking at right now. Don't get trapped in the sunshine. People meet, destinies collide, but the collision doesn't always result in the formation of something concrete.
-
The magical blue sky
By Jana from Yemen
"Let the blue sky meet the blue sea, and all is blue for a time."" - Moncy Barbour
I like to go to Tsim Sha Tsui to see this view. The blue sky and blue sea make me calm and happy.
-
Mama
By Rei from Sri Lanka
Mama, you are strong
Mama, you bear it all
Mama, this journey you’ve walked your feet never stopped
Mama, you’ve braced the flow
now let me embrace you slow -
It feels lonely to be a refugee
By Hope from Uganda
Being a refugee is not for a particular race! Anyone can become a refugee, it's a thing that happens to you, it's not who you are. Please, when you have the chance, render your hand to help refugees because it's so lonely not to have a place to call home.
Live & Learn
-
[1st Place] Window of knowledge
By Rei from Sri Lanka
10 minutes and 3 dollars is all it takes. To look in silence, observe the way of Hong Kong life. It’s fascinating how easy you’re on land then at sea so quickly. There’s so much to acknowledge on one boat ride only if you allow yourself to live in the moment.
-
[2nd Place] Together we can stand and make the world a better place
By Hope from Uganda
Foundations matter. When you have a strong support system, you can stand all of life's storms and hope for the best future.
-
[3rd Place] Breathe, unlearn, learn
By Janet from Philippines
Move out of the tangles more often!
Out of life's jungle to the open.
Breathe in the freshness of nature...
Breathe out the toxins of life...
Breathe in the dream future...
Breathe out the urge of strife..
Learn to appreciate...
Learn to meditate...
Learn to recalibrate...
Learn to self-motivate... -
Learning is the only solution
By Ryan from India
Believe in your heart that you’re meant to live a life full of passion, purpose, magic, and miracles.
-
Bright color gives positive vibes
By Diana from India
If you are walking down the right path and you are willing to keep walking, eventually you will make progress…
-
Love to be with nature
By Sami from Sri Lanka
I took this picture because I learned how to be patient and live with peace. When I listen to the ocean waves, I learn how to be patient and calm.
-
For the sake of home

Hong Kong the peaceful paradise to live and learn many phases of life!

Journey
By W.D.N.R from Sri Lanka
In this journey of
lovely life let's rest

The foggy island
By Jasmine from Yemen
Inspired by Christine Sine's Meditation Monday. The fog can be a place of quiet refuge for me. Sounds are muted. Sights are distorted and perspectives change.
-
The long day hike in nature
By Jana from Yemen
“I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;"
- William Wordsworth -
Paradise
By Glad from Gambia
The green forest, sky, and sun. Developing our cities is good, but we must always protect this beautiful scene of nature.
Hope & Healing
-
[1st Place] Healing bridge
By J. Studio from Rwanda
Cycling is my children's favourite sport. When I see that they are happy, it makes me happy too. That mountain you see is my joy, my hope, my good life, because when I go hiking I feel like I'm a new person and I trust that one day my life will shine. Don't give up. You need to have hope - hope is important in our situation.
-
[2nd Place] The beauty of nature and blue sky
By ISHU from Sri Lanka
Take a moment out of your busy life
spend time in nature
In silence
close your eyes for a moment,
And
join in with nature.
Open your eyes and look at nature
And the blue sky.
Are contemplate how amazing life is.
You feel like you are living life.
Nature is a fairy who heals you. -
[3rd Place] An amazing bond in the world
By ISHU from Sri Lanka
Animals are the living blood of nature. There is a wonderful bond between animals and nature. Animals that are part of nature can make this world a wonderful place. We are just tourists to this world. I appeal to you to protect this world that does not belong to us in the journey of our lives. Enjoy your life and explore.

A healing journey for asylum seekers in Hong Kong
By Ryan from India
Hope and healing are essential for all people, especially those seeking asylum. When a person is displaced from their home and community, they often experience great trauma. We must provide hope and healing for these individuals to help them rebuild their lives.

Skyscraper buildings, but no time for family
By Diana from India
"Hope lies in dreams, in imagination, and in the courage of those who dare to make the dreams into reality." - Dr. Jonas Salk
-
Stay patient with hope
By Sami from Sri Lanka
This picture tells me there is hope and that many people can heal themselves because they believe. Though I have lived many years in Hong Kong, I still keep hoping. Though we have been through tough times, the wounds have healed.
-
Nature lover
By Sofia from Pakistan
It seems the clouds are playing hide and seek. Hiking heals me and natural beauty gives me hope!
-
The art of nature
By ISHU from Sri Lanka
The butterfly is a wonderful creature created by nature. Gentle and colorful wings create an art of nature. In summer, butterflies fly freely, like a dream. Be obedient to nature. Your heart will feel the sensitivity of nature. So enjoy your special moments like a butterfly for the rest of your life. Life is precious.

The stick, the witch, and my imagination
By Rei from Sri Lanka
It’s silly how the longer I sat in this spot, the more my imagination drifted. We don’t have all the time to satisfy our inner child or enjoy the simpler things in life. Still, some days there’s hope in imagining and in how healing it is.
-
Mountain
By Glad from Gambia
There will always be obstacles in my path, but the trails can take me anywhere.

Let's flourish, be kind to one another
By Hope from Uganda
At the end of every harsh weather, spring comes in and kisses us with its beautiful and lovely weather and blooming flowers. Oh how I love spring! At the end of every tunnel, there's hope.
